We’ve all heard about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but have you heard about Small Business Saturday? Neither had I, until a couple of years ago—and all thanks to Instagram.Instagram is the social media hub of all things small business. You can find a plethora of makers, designers, letterers, photographers, bakers, and all the creatives in between struttin’ their stuff and completely rocking out their entrepreneurial roles. Last holiday season I began to notice a trend among the Instagram small business community. Words of “shop small” and “small biz Saturday” littered my feed like gold confetti. I was so enthralled by this concept of shopping small in order to support handmade, as well as the makers behind the product that the majority of my Christmas shopping was done from creatives I found on Instagram. When you “shop small” you’re not only receiving handcrafted, quality and unique pieces, you’re also supporting a small business owner so they can then support themselves and their families doing what they love. Small Business Saturday is ultimately about community and showing support for the makers and creatives out there. This holiday season I am still invested in the idea of shopping small because, A. I like supporting my fellow creatives + getting quality & unique gifts for my friends and family, and B. This year I have entered the realm of small business owner. Being able to participate in this year’s Small Business Saturday from the other side of the curtain is, quite frankly, pretty dang exciting and extremely rewarding. I am honored to be a part of such a wonderful community of creatives and to support one another in our entrepreneurial journeys. Have a favorite creative you’ve been following on Instagram? Show them some love and support this holiday season by finally ordering that hand-knitted scarf, hand-crafted clay pot, or hand-painted piece that you’ve had your eye on.I hope that you consider joining me and “shop small” this Small Business Saturday.
